SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) a Schenectady a€™s Rivers Casino is set to open in first quarter 2017, and hiring is in full swing.


Construction on the casino continues, and it'€™s expected to bring 1,000 new jobs. Now the city is taking steps to help those new employees find a place to live.

€œI've got a lot of people coming here from other locations that are settling in Schenectady, which I think is such a wonderful thing,Clancy Real Estate Agent Kelly Canuet said.

Canuet is helping Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy market 40 homes that are up for sale and within walking distance of the casino.

It'€™s part of the his €œWalk to Work€ initiative, which encourages people to live, work, and play all within walking distance as an effort to boost quality of life and increase overall property values.

€œYou have some very high end houses, good middle class houses, and you have some that you have to be more creative with,he said.They a€™re fixer uppers.

Schenectady has long struggled with vacant, rundown properties, but the sale of the city-owned homes has gone up two-fold since 2015. Private home sales have also seen a boost.

Canuet said there a€™s been a shift from renting to buying.

You can buy a three bedroom home for almost the same price as you can get a two bedroom apartment,she said.

It'€™s a good investment for buyers and good news for the city.

So by getting individuals who own their property, they maintain it; they care about increasing the value,McCarthy said.They worry about the neighborhood.

Neighborhoods currently filled with empty homes, ready and waiting for casino workers to buy them. But the first step is landing the job.

New housing initiative announced for potential employees of Rivers Casino

The hiring process has already begun and all signs point to the venue opening on time. As the construction process continues, as many as 1,000 new jobs are to be created. Because of this, the city of Schenectady is working to find places for the employees to call home.

Kelly Canuet is a Clancy Real Estate Agent who is working with the mayor of Schenectady, Gary McCarthy, to market a total of 40 homes that are currently for sale and are located near the casino, actually within walking distance. The process is part of the mayor’s Walk to Work initiative which encourages individuals to live and work as well as enjoy entertainment all within walking distance as a way to boost property values and improve the quality of life for locals.

The homes vary from high end houses to middle class homes as well as those that are fixer uppers. The city of Schenectady has struggled for some time with rundown properties that have stood vacant. However, the sale of homes owned by the city have increased as well as private home sales. According to Canuet, who spoke with News10, a shift has taken place from renting homes to buying. A three bedroom home can be purchased at almost the same price that a two bedroom apartment cost to rent.

The purchase of homes in the area are a good investment for the home buyer and good for the city as well. Individuals who own properties will maintain the home and yard, which increased the value in the neighborhood. There are currently neighborhoods where homes stand empty, which will hopefully be used by those who intend to work at the casino.

The first step in the process is for individuals to find a job. The casino has already filled around 40% of their employment positions, so around 60% remains to be filled.
